The fact of the matter is that your television was calibrated at the factory to look its best when sitting on a large well-lit sales floor and competing with neighboring units for your attention.  This means that the image has been tweaked to look its brightest, not it’s most accurate.

If the CRTs are not set for the proper color balance, skin tones tend to look orange and backgrounds tend to have an overly bluish glow to them.  White walls can look pink and objects that should be red tend to bloom and bleed into the surrounding objects.  Color will always be a bit off, no matter how much you play with the COLOR and TINT controls in the User Menu!  Also, because an artificially bright image places a heavier demand on the CRT tubes and the television's power supply, the lifespan of your very expensive TV is unnaturally shortened.
